OS X Drawer Handles

I have made a mockup of a very minor change which would really help OS X. Drawers currently pop out of nowhere. They are opened and closed via an icon in the toolbar or a menu command... This IMHO is a horrible interface. I like drawers, but it always a trick to figure out how to get them open.

My idea is to add a "handle" to the drawers. As you can see in the picture below, each drawer would have a tab attached. Clicking on the tab would open the drawer.

Below is an open drawer with handle. Clicking on the handle would close the drawer. Dragging the tab would allow you to open the drawer to a specific width.

To reduce confusion (and maximize space), the tabs should only show for the front window. As a window goes to the background, it's handles (tabs) would slide behind the window... and out of sight. When a window comes to the forground, the tabs would slide back out.
